Its time for us Progressives to step up and make our voices heard.
Here is some issues I think that Texas Democrats need to address ASAP:
1) Immigration.
2) The Education System--or what I call "The Education Crisis" do away with standarized testing like the TASP test-- We can think our wonderful former Governor George W. Bush for this.
3) Speak out against the Extreme Conservative Block... In the Texas House of Representatives we have almost an even number of Democrats and Republicans. Why is that, we feel Texas is a extreme Conservative state--when it is so obvious that we are bi-partisan.
4) Register new voters, and get our message out in large numbers.
5) Go to churches, synagouges, and mosques and reclaim the bible and religious morality.
6) Increase and Expand Organizations like Planned Parenthood...so they can give high schools birth control, and other low income famlies affordable birth control
7) Revamp Lonestar Cards and Food Stamp Aid
As November 4th becomes the most historical night in American History--as Americans elect their first African American President-- John Mccain and Sarah Palin, will have to think to themselves-- "What went wrong? Why did we get defeated in this election?" But this shouldnt be rocket science to them... even a lay person who is a newbie to politics, can see why this election just didnt work for the Republicans. Here is my opinion on why it's not going to work:
1) Sarah Palin, herself.
John Mccain's best and worst asset to his campaign has been his own running mate. She made the campaign for him interesting and brought back some life and spunk in it. But, the self proclaimed "pit bull with lipstick" is lacking substance. Had Mccain picked a lively candidate like Huckabee, this mightv'e turned out different. But of course, If's never solved anything... The facts are when your'e own running mate overshadows you, you have a problem. And she did that during the most crucial time for John Mccain to make his message known. And he wrongfully thought that if he picked a woman--that it would ensure him some Hillary voters-- "Say it isnt so, Joe."--"It's so" It didnt work.
2) Negative Campaigning.
John Mccain's consistent negative ads against Barack Obama's associations with those pals of his, have done nothing for Mccain's image. Mccain has simply built what Barack Obama wanted him to be-- a sniffling old man, whos angry at the world...come on. The voters did not want to see Obama's associations or any of that trivial stuff--they wanted messages of what Mccain would do for America. Obama was sucessful in rightfully lumping Mccain with the corruption and the misguided polices of the Bush Administration. The Mccain camp jumped on the bandwagon of change--too little, too late... as Joe the Plumber was introduced--there is only 2 weeks left to the campaign...and Americans arent convinced.
3) Lack of Republican Enthusiasim
The base has never been strongly for Mccain to begin with. As with Obama, we have been united under him--after Hillary stepped down. As Rush Limbaugh, was spouting off "He is the lesser of two devils"-- Hillary was rounding her supporters to, "Follow Barack as you would follow me" Lets face it...The Democrats understood that they had to unite as a party to see ourselves in the White House. And we supported him, and backed him 100%. I dont think a lot of Republicans or people that have supported the Republican party have been too excited about the Mccain ticket... thats until Palin--and well, I am not going to beat a dead horse...
4) The Surge of New Voters
One thing that the Republicans have count on, is the surge of new registered voters. Both African American and Young Voters--that are leaning towards voting for Obama. I dont think we fully understand the extent of the impact this is going to have on November 4th. People have really became passionite about this election and it shows with the people.
No offense to those in high school and are girls, but this girl hit out of the park when describing Sarah Palin-- her name is Hannah Grocott she is from Minnechaug Regional Highschool and she posted this on Governor Palin's Facebook forum on September, 26, 2008-- I thought I'd like to share it...
okay 1st off: "the only one of the four with executive experience"? Mitt Romney had executive experience. So did Huckabee! There goes that argument.2nd: "She's not running for president" She might as well be! McCain is 71 yrs old, when the average lifespan of an American male is 73! Do you honestly think that he's gonna last even one term before kicking the bucket? And finally:"its better to have someone with no Washington experience" You REALLY want someone who has never even been in a session of Congress before? Wouldn't experience in Washington be helpful??read this:* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."* If you grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, you're a quintessential American story.* If your name is Barack, you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.* If you name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.* If you graduate from Harvard law School, you are unstable.* If you attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.* If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system, while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
Bravo and hats off to Hannah!!!!Shes the future of America!--Dave.
Nine days to the election--the race factor doesnt seem to be an issue. I find it crazy, and I am more than proud that our country has moved past some of his prejudices to elect the first African American President.
I remember when I was 13, a teacher said, "That a lot will have to happen for a black President to be elected. It probably wont happen for a long time." I really agreed with her at 13, and I believe we are more than adeaquately ready for America to have it's first African American President.
All across the nation we are seeing a shift in national opinion and the walls are coming down. In Virginia, a state that 200 years ago--was famous for it's slave trade-- is now leaning towards electing Barack Obama.
In the 4th district of Colorado, a solid Republican district (Dobson's territory) we are seeing that it's looking more blue.
Everywhere across the nation, people are looking towards Barack Obama as an instrument of change.
That seems to be everywhere--except here.
A State that has been Democratic in the past, has been gerry mandered, has been metaphorically slammed into being a red state. Have we forgotten that this state--had solid Democrat governors--up until Bush--such as Ann Richards.
As the state of Lyndon B. Johnson, and other Democrats--it baffles me why our heritage has been lost.
People here refuse to vote for Barack Obama for the most ridicilous reasons. And one of the biggest reasons is that, he is 'black'.
Another big reason, is that people falsely believe that he is a 'muslim'.
Now, I have made race a big topic of this blog--but I love Obama not because of his color. I love him because of his message, his resolve and his plan for the nation. It wouldnt matter if he were white, black, red, or yellow-- he would still resonate as a strong leader.
As for the muslim issue--He is not a muslim. But if he were, what would be wrong with that? Would him being muslim keep him from being an effective leader? NO. He would still be a strong leader, regardless!!!! I laugh at the stupidity and sheer ignorance of people to use that as their issue for hating him.
Texas is still stuck in the 60's. A lot of people that the externals, effect the character of a man. What should matter is what's inside Barack's message.
If you dont like Barack because of his issues, than fine. But dislike him for this. Dont dislike him because he has a funny name...or because you think he is a muslim....
