As November 4th becomes the most historical night in American History--as Americans elect their first African American President-- John Mccain and Sarah Palin, will have to think to themselves-- "What went wrong? Why did we get defeated in this election?" But this shouldnt be rocket science to them... even a lay person who is a newbie to politics, can see why this election just didnt work for the Republicans. Here is my opinion on why it's not going to work:
1) Sarah Palin, herself.
John Mccain's best and worst asset to his campaign has been his own running mate. She made the campaign for him interesting and brought back some life and spunk in it. But, the self proclaimed "pit bull with lipstick" is lacking substance. Had Mccain picked a lively candidate like Huckabee, this mightv'e turned out different. But of course, If's never solved anything... The facts are when your'e own running mate overshadows you, you have a problem. And she did that during the most crucial time for John Mccain to make his message known. And he wrongfully thought that if he picked a woman--that it would ensure him some Hillary voters-- "Say it isnt so, Joe."--"It's so" It didnt work.
2) Negative Campaigning.
John Mccain's consistent negative ads against Barack Obama's associations with those pals of his, have done nothing for Mccain's image. Mccain has simply built what Barack Obama wanted him to be-- a sniffling old man, whos angry at the world...come on. The voters did not want to see Obama's associations or any of that trivial stuff--they wanted messages of what Mccain would do for America. Obama was sucessful in rightfully lumping Mccain with the corruption and the misguided polices of the Bush Administration. The Mccain camp jumped on the bandwagon of change--too little, too late... as Joe the Plumber was introduced--there is only 2 weeks left to the campaign...and Americans arent convinced.
3) Lack of Republican Enthusiasim
The base has never been strongly for Mccain to begin with. As with Obama, we have been united under him--after Hillary stepped down. As Rush Limbaugh, was spouting off "He is the lesser of two devils"-- Hillary was rounding her supporters to, "Follow Barack as you would follow me" Lets face it...The Democrats understood that they had to unite as a party to see ourselves in the White House. And we supported him, and backed him 100%. I dont think a lot of Republicans or people that have supported the Republican party have been too excited about the Mccain ticket... thats until Palin--and well, I am not going to beat a dead horse...
4) The Surge of New Voters
One thing that the Republicans have count on, is the surge of new registered voters. Both African American and Young Voters--that are leaning towards voting for Obama. I dont think we fully understand the extent of the impact this is going to have on November 4th. People have really became passionite about this election and it shows with the people.
