For months, I have been waiting for the tidal wave of Republicans to hit the congress. I have spent months reading news clippings, getting upset, and then suddenly came to a great peace. My Friends, I am okay with a Republican takeover in the congress. And here is why, I think it can be good for the country:
1) The House and the Senate being divided will actually lean to compromise.
Americans aren't conservative, they aren't liberal-either. They are uniquely all shades in between. It's hard to see here in West Texas, but even here in Plainview-- you will see that some people, are different in what they support. For instance- myself- I support Universal Health Care, but oppose Abortion and Gay Marriage. I bet I can find some others that don't want extremists in the congress. That being said, when you have two legislative bodies that are ideologically different-they have no choice but to work together.
2) The President has no choice but to move to the center.
If the President continues pushing his ideology- which most of the Americans feel is too extreme. No matter how it might benefit the country, he will not be elected in 2012. The President has a choice to become the new Carter or the new Clinton. My thoughts are that I cannot see the President move to the center. Obama is already ready to be a one-term President. However, if he does want his job, which that's something that's not really evident right now... he will have no choice but to compromise as well.
3) Balanced Government is always better, and the people believe in it.
Reagan lost a lot of seats, Clinton did, and Bush did as well. With the exception of Bush... Both of the Former Presidents saw structure come to America. The people benefit by a balanced government.
What this election DOES not signify
1) An Extreme Right Mandate.
When I say Extreme Right mandate- I say that it's a state that says we deregulate everything- Banks, Housing Markets, Health Care, School Loans, etc.. etc... The win by the Tea Party Republicans were pushed by independents- who can be bought and sold through their pocketbooks. If the economy was better, if there was EVEN a move to try to revive the economy by the Obama administration and the Democrats-- there would be a different result tonight.
When it comes down to it...
The Midterm Election in 2010, looks much like the Midterm in 1994. And, midterms always change our country for the better.
I want to congratulate the Republicans that have won (except for Rick Perry. grr.)
Dave.
